This paddle departs from the Emerald Necklace Marina on the Rocky River. Starting out in the protected water of the Rocky River, we’ll journey out to Lake Erie, and–sea conditions permitting–paddle offshore for a view of the Cleveland skyline. Our return trip will take us westward along the impressive cliffs of the Lakewood coast.
Distance: 5.5 miles
Duration: 3 hrs (2 hrs paddling)
Difficulty Rating: Novice
What you'll see: A spectacular river valley with impressive shale and limestone cliffs; riverfront homes (including the Elliot Ness home) and marinas; and a view of the Cleveland skyline. Wildlife sightings include: great blue heron, mallard ducks, wood ducks, cormorants, and if we’re lucky, bald eagles fishing along the coast.
All participants will receive an Adventure Kit that includes gifts from our sponsors at Joshua Tree Sunscreen, Murphy’s Naturals Insect Repellent, Taos Bars, Daily Crunch, Field Notes, NoSo patches, Myra Cookies, Redmond Relyte, Zanfel, and more! We will also have coffee to fill your mugs before the start of the adventure.
And, as always, reach out to us in advance if you money is short or you do not have access to transportation and we can help make sure you can still join us.

What to Bring for Kayaking
- Weather-appropriate clothing that is moisture-wicking and quick-drying.
- Sturdy, secured footwear to ensure safety during your excursion.
- Opt for reusable drink and snack containers; we prohibit single-use items such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, and snack bags.
- Bring along some cash if you wish to purchase merchandise during your trip.
More details on how to prepare for your adventure:
- Quick-drying clothing: Opt for synthetic materials like polyester or nylon that dry quickly. Avoid cotton as it tends to stay wet and can make you feel cold and uncomfortable.
- Moisture-wicking base layers: Wear a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, helping you stay dry and comfortable throughout your kayak trip.
- Sun protection: Since you'll be out on the water, it's crucial to protect yourself from the sun's harmful UV rays. Consider wearing a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and pants to cover your skin.
- Water shoes or sandals: Choose footwear that can get wet and provide good traction on slippery surfaces. Water shoes or sandals with straps are ideal for kayaking as they stay secure on your feet.
- Windbreaker or light rain jacket: Even in warmer months, the weather can change quickly, and wind may pick up. Consider bringing along a windbreaker or a light jacket to stay warm if the temperature drops or if there's a breeze on the water.
- Hat and sunglasses: Protect your head and eyes from the sun's glare with a hat and sunglasses. A hat with a brim will also help keep the sun off your face and neck.
- Dry bag: Consider bringing a dry bag to keep your belongings safe and dry while you're on the water. This is especially important if you plan to bring items like your phone, camera, or extra clothing.
- Layering: Since weather conditions can vary, especially near water, it's a good idea to dress in layers. This allows you to adjust your clothing according to temperature changes throughout your kayak trip.
- Avoid bulky clothing: Bulky clothing can restrict your movement and become uncomfortable when wet. Stick to lightweight, non-restrictive clothing for ease of movement while paddling.
