About The Event

Join Black Women Explore and Open Trail Collective for a self-guided kayaking journey down the Cuyahoga River with kayaks provoied by our friends at Float the River. We will start at 9AM to beat the tubing crowds and to see the river in its full morning beauty. There is typically more wildlife around at this time as well! Please note that this is not a guided adventure but rather kayak rentals in a self-guided fashion as we paddle down the river as a group.

All participants will receive an Adventure Kit that includes gifts from our sponsors at Joshua Tree Sunscreen, Murphy’s Naturals Insect Repellent, Taos Bars, Daily Crunch, Field Notes, and more! Four lucky participants will receive dry bags from ZenBivy. We will also have coffee provided by Yada Yada Coffee to fill your mugs before the start of the adventure.

Please ensure you arrive at our meeting point at 2374 Front St in Downtown Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, 15 minutes early to ensure we can get started on time. Remember to sign your waiver online beforehand using the provided link: Online Waiver.

Parking is limited, so we encourage carpooling to alleviate any parking constraints. Please reach out to us in advance if you do not have access to transportation and we can help arrange a ride.

Gear Swap

As with all of our events, we will have space for a gear swap where you can pass on your well-loved gear for something new to you. You can exchange your well-loved and clean hiking boots for a new-to-you pair, trade in your old backpack for one with more pockets, bring those running shoes you bought and never used, or snag a cozy fleece for chilly nights under the stars. Dive into a treasure trove of outdoor essentials, from tents and sleeping bags to water bottles and sunglasses. More details on the gear swap here

The Gear Swap will take place out of the back of my subaru after the kayaking trip.

What to Expect

Upon arrival at our designated parking area, present your pre-signed waivers for check-in and collect your wristbands. We'll then shuttle you to the starting point of your adventure at Middlebury Rd in Kent, where you'll paddle downstream to Waterworks Park. This is a 4.5 mile trip and should take you anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on flow and the amount you paddle downstream.

Please note that we maintain strict policies against single-use items like plastic and glass bottles, snack bags, plastic bags, aluminum cans, and cigarette packs. Our commitment to preserving the river and its wildlife guides these regulations, ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable experience for all.

*More details on how to prepare for your adventure:

  1. Quick-drying clothing: Opt for synthetic materials like polyester or nylon that dry quickly. Avoid cotton as it tends to stay wet and can make you feel cold and uncomfortable.
  2. Moisture-wicking base layers: Wear a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, helping you stay dry and comfortable throughout your kayak trip.
  3. Sun protection: Since you'll be out on the water, it's crucial to protect yourself from the sun's harmful UV rays. Consider wearing a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and pants to cover your skin.
  4. Water shoes or sandals: Choose footwear that can get wet and provide good traction on slippery surfaces. Water shoes or sandals with straps are ideal for kayaking as they stay secure on your feet.
  5. Windbreaker or light jacket: Even in warmer months, the weather can change quickly, and wind may pick up. Consider bringing along a windbreaker or a light jacket to stay warm if the temperature drops or if there's a breeze on the water.
  6. Hat and sunglasses: Protect your head and eyes from the sun's glare with a hat and sunglasses. A hat with a brim will also help keep the sun off your face and neck.
  7. Dry bag: Consider bringing a dry bag to keep your belongings safe and dry while you're on the water. This is especially important if you plan to bring items like your phone, camera, or extra clothing.
  8. Layering: Since weather conditions can vary, especially near water, it's a good idea to dress in layers. This allows you to adjust your clothing according to temperature changes throughout your kayak trip.
  9. Avoid bulky clothing: Bulky clothing can restrict your movement and become uncomfortable when wet. Stick to lightweight, non-restrictive clothing for ease of movement while paddling.
